Chicago will give $500 a month to 5,000 low income households through the nonprofit GiveDirectly, in a year-long pilot program starting as soon as late June. The money will go to households with an income below 250% of the federal poverty level who experienced hardship due to Covid-19. The city hopes the program, which will cost $31.5 million, will aid its pandemic economic bounceback. There are similar programs in Florida and Minnesota, and GiveDirectly is engaged in one in Georgia. Studies show that families spend such cash on essentials. Families know best what they need, said Brandie Knazze, Chicagos commissioner for family and support services. To have $500 a month to buy formula matters. Charity analysts rank GiveDirectly highly for directly impacting the lives of those it helps.
