Deb Martinez and her staff at Mission of Love Charities in the Washington, D.C. area help house the homeless and find jobs for the unemployed -- helping people that many would otherwise give up on. There are stories like Terion Laney who showed up at the mission two years ago, suffering from amnesia. He didn’t know his name and had been homeless in the D.C. area for five years, sleeping in cars and temporary shelters. Now, Laney has a job and an apartment, thanks to Mission of Love. His memory returned and his dignity has been restored as well. How do they do it? According to Martinez, “Our first goal is to restore hope. We start with simple acts of human kindness, addressing them with respect, offering a haircut, a meal, a place to shower and wash their clothes. That shows you care, and that fuels the transformation.”
