New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said recently that world leaders and tech firms looking to stamp out violent extremism online need to focus efforts on understanding social media algorithms that drive content. The existence of algorithms themselves is not necessarily the problem, it's whether or not they are ethically used," Ardern said. Her comments came in a news conference after the virtual summit that marked the second anniversary of the global initiative to end online hate, which is called the Christchurch Call. The initiative and community were launched by Ardern and French President Emmanuel Marcon in 2019. Since then, more than 50 countries, international organizations and tech firms have supported the initiative, including Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft. Ardern went on to say that tech firms expressed a real desire at the forum to use algorithms for positive interventions.
