The northern town of Malakal, South Sudan changed leadership 12 times in three years, torn apart in a three-way conflict among President Salva Kiir and Dinka forces, now vice president Riek Machar, and a Shiiluk Agwelek militia led by General Johnson Olony. The Protection of Civilians (PoC) camp is now the last Shiiluk presence in the area, situated 15 minutes away FROM the town. Rebecca Anyiel, a Dinka and `member` of the Women's Union, is one among many helping to bridge ethnic divides through business relationships. You can find women from the PoC and the town working together, said Anyiel. They are selling fish and vegetables in the market. This contributes to peace and encourages people to stay together. At other times, Anyiel and others offer their homes to Shiiluk women running from violence on the streets. Trust-building between both communities is incredibly important," she says.
