The Prison Art Collective is a safe haven for incarcerated individuals in California state prisons. Initiated in 2013 by a collaboration between Prison Art Collective and the global talent agency Huxley, the project spans over 15 weeks, reaching the hearts of nearly 450 incarcerated participants. Each class features guest artists such as Willo Perron, a graphic designer, or David Ostow, a cartoonist. Topics range from scriptwriting, creative storytelling, and cartooning to illustration, collage making, and creative mindfulness. The arts are a way to channel and deal with with emotion," says Perron. "And I think a lot of people that wind up in these difficult binds have just reacted or and didn't have the outlets." For the prisoners, it is a place where they can feel safe and express emotions through therapeutic outlets.
