The book “Restorative Cities: Urban Design for Mental Health and Wellbeing,” written by Jenny Roe and Layla McCay delves into decades of research to uncover how elements in a physical environment affect the people living there. They’ve created a blueprint for a “restorative city,” in which urban residents can be happier, healthier and more socially connected. The restorative city includes the following elements: green spaces, blue (water) spaces, sensory spaces, neighborly spaces, active spaces, playable spaces and inclusive spaces. When asked whether green space may be the most important aspect of their restorative city model, Roe said, “I don’t think having nature in the city is a luxury. It’s an absolute essential requirement for public health, but also for planetary health and the resilience of our cities.”
